Alan R. Hancock

Legal/Judicial Experience: Island County Superior Court Judge, 1989-present.  Attorney, 1985-88.  Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, 1976-84.

Other Professional Experience: Washington Supreme Court’s Ethics Advisory Committee (chair); Code of Judicial Conduct Task Force (co-chair).  Board of Trustees, Superior Court Judges’ Association (SCJA).  SCJA Family and Juvenile Law, Ethics, Rural Courts, and Therapeutic Courts Committees.

Education: University of Washington Law School.  Western Washington University.  Coupeville High School.

Community Service: Coupeville United Methodist Church, Central Whidbey Lions Club, Navy League of the United States, Island County Historical Society, San Juan Historical Society, Kenmore & District Pipe Band, Sons of the American Revolution.

Statement: Judge Hancock’s distinguished judicial service since 1989 is exemplified by his Outstanding Judge Award from the Washington State Bar Association for his commitment to fairness and excellence, and his 20-year Judicial Service Award from the Washington State Association for Justice in appreciation of his diligent service and his commitment to the state justice system. With his judicial colleagues, Judge Hancock has implemented many programs to provide for judicial efficiency and access to justice. These include CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), therapeutic drug courts, family law mediation, parenting seminars, telephonic court appearances, a courthouse facilitator program, and a language assistance program. In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Hancock has served on numerous boards, committees, and task forces to improve the quality of justice in the Washington State. He chaired the Washington Supreme Court’s Ethics Advisory Committee for 9 years, and co-chaired its Code of Judicial Conduct Task Force, which resulted in the passage of an improved judicial conduct code. Judge Hancock and his wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Hancock, live on the family farm near Coupeville.
