Statement: Michael is part of a new breed of prosecutors that focus on long-term solutions to criminal justice issues. Most criminal defendants suffer from substance abuse issues, mental illness, or both. Continuing to incarcerate these people without providing treatment only worsens the problem.
In Jefferson County criminal defendants have access to several therapeutic courts. Under Michael’s leadership, the usage of these therapeutic courts has increased noticeably. For example, the number of Drug Court graduates has nearly doubled since Haas took office. At the same time, the Prosecutor’s Office also prosecutes violent and sex offenders aggressively. Under Haas’ leadership the number of sex offender prosecutions has more than doubled over that of the prior administration.
The Office provides outstanding, politically unbiased, civil representation to County Offices. Clients are told what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. Michael leads an open, accessible, fiscally responsible, non-partisan, professional, and independent off ce, that serves the community well.
“It’s been a privilege to serve you as your Prosecutor these past several years. I’ve brought together one of the best legal teams Jefferson County has ever seen. I look forward to four more years of service. Thank you.” – Michael Haas
