Amy Glasser

Elected Experience: None. I am not a politician - simply a citizen stepping up to offer a voice to the voiceless and speak to the concerns of North Bellingham residents.

Other Professional Experience: Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with 39 years’ experience working to empower the poor and the most vulnerable. Specific expertise in the treatment and prevention of child abuse. Direct service and management work with the US Army, State and local governments as well as non-profits and private practice.

Education: B.A. Social Services, University of New Hampshire; Master of Social Work, University of Connecticut

Community Service: Social work is in-the-trenches community service.

Statement: We spend 55% - 70% of our county budget directly or indirectly locking people up. Diversion from jail and preventive services including homes for the homeless, comprehensive triage, and enhanced drug, mental health and family courts are less costly and more effective than incarceration. These initiatives will dramatically reduce our jail population, negating the need for a huge, wildly expensive jail. Sell the Ferndale property and fix or replace the old jail in town. As a fiscal conservative I can help save money, encourage effective humane services, that will keep the community safer.

Our present industries are important, but the future lies in the expansion of renewable energy businesses.  Farmers, tribal leaders, municipalities and businesses must work together on the proper use and preservation of our water and environment while always honoring Native treaty rights.

A vote for me adds another progressive and woman to the council; it keeps my opponent on the council and avoids an undemocratic appointment by the council, where citizens have no vote.

Endorsed by you and Our Revolution, Planned Parenthood Act, Women’s Political Caucus and preferred by Whatcom Green Party. Together, we’ll put people first, enrich our business climate and enhance our quality of life.
